Science Buddies: "Ask an Expert"

My project is studying the effects of ultraviolet rays on yeast colony growth, and I'm finding that the yeast takes longer to grow than specified on the package. I also have to do 3 more trials (all at the same time) with only 2 forecasted sunny days before my project is due, and sun is crucial to the whole experiment. Is there any OTHER way I can expose my cultures to UV rays? Like, a special lamp or something? Or am I going to have to just make due?

Yes, you can purchase UV lamps/lights. You can do a google search to see which stores around you would carry one. It seems like they are sold most at craft stores and large department stores, but that may just be in my area. I would double check by searching "UV lamps" or "UV light" and go to the shopping results to see if any place by you carries them.

Ivy has given you some great advice! You can definitely purchase a UV lamp. If you have trouble finding one, most commercially sold blacklights give off UV light as well.
