The answer to your question is that it really depends on the teacher's requirements and the general grade level. I had to start writing abstracts in middle school, but by the time you reach high school (maybe even earlier, depending on the amount of practice you get with them), you will have created quite a few. An abstract should be fairly simple to compose because you write it after an experiment is done, all the results are analyzed, and the conclusion is ready. It serves as a concise, but effective, summary of your entire project. In other words, anyone who reads it should be able to understand your project "in a nutshell," so to speak. Not only that, but if you also happen to forget quite a bit about your project, the abstract can help you remember all the key points! :)
