Why do mnemonics help to improve memory?

What parts of your brain react to mnemonics and why?

The brain is not my specific area of expertise, but I know that many different parts of the brain are implicated in memory formation and retention (forming and keeping memories). One area of the brain often associated with memories is the limbic system. You could try doing a Google search for "limbic system" to learn more about it, and keep going from there to research other parts of the brain involved in memory.

I'm not sure that we know what exact part(s) of the brain respond the most to mnemonics. One way a scientist might try to find out is to see what part(s) of the brain is/are activated when someone is learning a mnemonic. That procedure is too complicated for a student science project, but you could try looking up "mnemonic" on Google Scholar to see if any researchers have done those kinds of experiments.
