Hi, welcome to science buddies!
Baking soda is made of sodium bicarbonate, while baking powder contains sodium bicarbonate, cream of tartar (which is acidic, in contrast the the basic sodium bicarbonate), and a drying component (usually a type of starch).
Baking soda begins to work when added to something acidic (think of baking soda and vinegar) and the bubbles from the reaction cause the baked goods to rise.
Baking powder, on the other hand, starts working either when added to something moist (single-acting powder) or by moisture and again by temperature (double-acting powder).
Was this what you were looking for?
