Science Buddies: "Ask an Expert"

I want to make a metal detector(which must be relatively simple to understand) and i have also seen some techniques to make it(with a radio and a calculator) but i want to ask that is there any way that the metal detector can be made without using the AM radio and the calculator as a whole?
PS: I am asking this because i want the project to look genuine and completely homemade with no ready-made accessories

Please reply fast(I have to submit the project by 6th June)
