Have you ever gone to pour yourself a cup of milk, and all you get is clumps? What happened to the milk is called coagulation, which is the mechanism that occurs when proteins in the milk clump together. While you do not necessarily want this in your milk, without coagulation (or curdling), there would be no cheese or yogurt, which is why it is a very important process in the food industry. Wonder how you can make milk curdle? Do this activity to find out!
Lesson Plan
Grade: 5th
In this fun chemistry lesson, students will explore chemical reactions by mixing pineapple juice and milk. Students will observe whether the properties of milk change when it is mixed with pineapple juice, as well as how they change. They will then infer from their results whether a chemical reaction happened. In the process, they will not only learn about chemical reactions but also discover the importance of enzymes and their role in the human body.
NGSS Performance Expectations:
- 5-PS1-4. Conduct an investigation to determine whether the mixing of two or more substances results in new substances.

Use these free STEM lesson plans and activities to teach students about biotechnology—options for all grade levels!
Biotechnology involves using biological processes and systems to make or improve products. Using yeast to make bread is often offered as a simple example of biotechnology, as a living organism (yeast) is used to make a specific food product (bread). Many people think of biotechnology, however, in more cutting-edge contexts,…

Use these free chemistry lesson plans, experiments, and activities to teach and explore chemical reactions with K-12 students.
A chemical reaction occurs when two or more substances (reactants) are mixed together and result in one or more new substances (products). When teaching about chemical reactions, educators show chemical reactions in action and, when possible, let students get hands-on exploring reactions. With classroom science experiments,…
