The 2024 Science Buddies Engineering Challenge

More than 8,800 K-12 students explored engineering and entered the 2024 Science Buddies Engineering Challenge. Working in teams of 1-4, students from 32 countries took the Rubber Band Car Challenge to design a car made from simple materials and powered only by a rubber band. In the U.S., entries were received from students in 44 states.

The annual Engineering Challenge makes it easy for educators to plan and do a hands-on engineering activity with students at all grade levels.

"The Science Buddies Engineering Challenge is all about trying engineering. The Rubber Band Car Challenge used simple materials, which made it accessible to students of all ages and in all locations," said Tina Lanese, President of Science Buddies. "The challenge to increase the distance the car traveled encouraged students to make design and/or materials changes to try to improve the overall score. Students did a fantastic job using the engineering design process for the Rubber Band Car Challenge!"

The 2024 Rubber Band Car Challenge Leader Boards

Celebrating Innovation and Creativity in Engineering

The Rubber Band Car Challenge had specific rules and requirements, but there was a lot of room for students to innovate and come up with their own designs using the allowed materials and making sure the car had at least one axle and at least one wheel. The image below offers a look at some of the many models of rubber band cars that were submitted.

Do Engineering with Students Throughout the Year

While the official 2024 Science Buddies Engineering Challenge has ended, the project directions and instructional materials for the Rubber Band Car Challenge and all prior Engineering Challenges are available for free. These are ideal projects to teach engineering anytime and work well in a variety of settings.
