Science Buddies: "Ask an Expert"

I am doing an experiment of yeast metabolism.
I want to ask if it’ normal if there’s little to no carbon dioxide when the yeast solution has no aeration.
Please I need help!

Hi,
As long as the yeast have sugar to eat, they should produce CO2 regardless of whether or not they have oxygen. The cells are capable of surviving under bot aerobic and anaerobic conditions and they will make carbon dioxide gas in both cases--provided they have a sugar like glucose or sucrose (glucose--fructose disaccharide) to work on.

How fresh were your yeast? Fresh yeast will start to produce CO2 within minutes.
