How do you go about creating a hypothesis for a research/data comparison project?

Hi there!

Thank you for your question!

If you are comparing two or more sets of data, I would suggest basing your hypothesis on a proposed correlation between the datasets. For example, say you have a dataset on scores obtained on a test for every student in a class and a corresponding dataset about how many hours each student studied for the test; you can hypothesize that the number of hours a student spent studying for the test is correlated (or perhaps even causative) with the score they received - that is, the number of hours they studied affected the score they received in some way (that a relationship between the datasets exists).

I would suggest looking into concepts like correlation, causation, and independence. Statistical tests (e.g. T-test, Chi-squared test) may help you out here!

If you need some general guidance for structuring hypotheses, Science Buddies has some excellent resources! Consider checking out https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... fic-method and https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... hypothesis.

All the best with your project, and please let us know if we can help you further!
