Science Buddies: "Ask an Expert"

Hi,

I have just finished my Science project for this year. I am looking at projects for next year and I found Three, Two, One...Blast Off! Learn to Design an Ion Engine. (https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... p058.shtml) to be interesting.

How would someone Build something like that? And is this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BwqD3uebmy4 the same thing?

Yes, the device in the YouTube video demonstrates the basic principle of a space ion engine. Given that it operates in the normal atmosphere, some characteristics are different.

The project mentioned at Science Buddies covers only the numerical simulation provided by NASA. You could certainly build something like the device shown in the video. You could make a worthy science project out of it if you make definite measurements rather than just blowing a paper ribbon. I would suggest comparing the input electrical power to the output mechanical power. I am sure that only a small part of the power comes out as thrust, so finding where the rest of the power goes and how you could optimize the engine begins to provide some real science and technology interest.

Such a device requires a very high-voltage power supply. That supply will be very dangerous, and it could be lethal. I have not verified that this electrical device is not lethal, so investigate and use it carefully as if it were lethal. Be sure your responsible adults approve and supervise your work.
