Science Buddies: "Ask an Expert"

I want to participate in my school's science Fair this year, but I'm not too sure on where to head. I kind of want to go towards environmental issues, and how to fix some of those, since many of my school's winners have all been towards that field. I'm interested in doing bleep to do with water quality, or bleep based around environmental issues. Any Suggestions? I would greatly appreciate if anyone responds. Thanks!

I was going to go into the water quality one, and research different kinds of materials that could filter water successfully. However, I ran into a roadblock, because all of the permeable rocks were already taken as water filters, which would make my filter seem unoriginal & against the rules. Does anyone have any ideas on potentially anything that I could use instead of common filter materials like activated carbon or mixed media? Should I just try and go into a different topic with more selection?

You won’t necessarily find a readymade experiment on an entirely new material for water filtering or cleaning, although you could design your own project to explore that.
