Desalination

Post by qianpeiw740 »

Hi!

I'm doing a project on desalination and I'm writing my experiment plan. I'm not really sure what the materials I would need to make a basic desalination device so does anyone have any idea???

Here is one link to a ScienceBuddies project on desalinization:

What sort of desalinization technique interests you? The science fair projects I have found are based on distillation. The newer desalization plants being built in the United States are primarily being built on reverse osmosis, as far as I have been able to find out. There are several other processes that will also work, as you may have discovered in your research. It would help us to help you if we knew what grade in school you are in and how much science you have already studied.

You have picked a very important subject to study. Several areas of the nation and world may soon have to depend on desalinization for their drinking water. I hope you have great success in studying this extremely important topic.

Hi
I'm in eighth grade. I'm close to writing my report but not quite. I think I'll be doing a experiment based on distillation using a heat lamp or something instead of sunlight. I'll find out which water and salt solution has the greatest ability to retain heat to get a low pressure environment- which I hope will lower the water's boiling point more vapor can be produced and condensed to produce fresh water.

What is your hypothesis? If it involves anything to do with obtaining fresh water from ocean water, you don't get to choose your salts and concentrations.

You really need to be thinking about and refining your hypothesis as that will drive your experimental design.
