artificial skin

Post by javan »

I am frustrated, I need to make artificial skin for my school project, and can not think of what to use, it has to be stretchable, and it has to be 25cm X 25cm. It must cover and protect the cells below. and it must be made up of four layers of different materials.
I could use some help please !! thanks

Hi javan,

This sounds like a very interesting (and fun!) project! Could you please tell us more about your science fair project and what it is that you are trying to demonstrate? That should enable us to better help you.

What have you been able to find out about skin composition in your background research? Although I don't recommend using this as a sole source (Wikipedia is not peer-reviewed), a good starting point might be to look at this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skin

This should give you some idea as to the different layers within skin and the function (purpose) of each. Once you know what they do, try thinking of easy-to-find things that could mimic the appearance or consistency of each layer, and incorporate them into your design.

As to your original question, I would think that a square section of latex (or another elastic material) would be a great start! The other layers should consist of other materials that can also be easily manipulated into your design, such as bubble-wrap, foam (like the material found in padded chairs, etc.), and so on.

Please let us know more about your project, what you have found out about skin composition and what you think might work based on your research.

Good luck!
Geoff.
