Swimming Science Project

Post by dancingmag125 »

Hi! I'm wanting to do a science over something to do with swimming. I enjoy swimming greatly and I want to a project around it. If you have any ideas on a project I could do, I'd greatly appresiate it. Thanks!

Hi,
For help with choosing a topic please visit our project ideas page:
https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... l?From=tab
I don't know if there are any projects specifically devoted to swimming, but there are certainly some procedures that could be adapted to your interest.
Please let us know if you have any other questions about specific topics or about how to start your experiment.

Thanks Chris. I have already used that, but didn't find a project dealing with swimming. That's why I was asking for an idea. Thanks again!

dear dancingmag125,

Thank you for contacing science buddies. I found some science fair projects that involve sports, which you can adapt to swimming (the projects involving food science can be adaptable to any sport). Here is the link for the projects: http://www.juliantrubin.com/topicprojec ... jects.html

good luck,

Hi dancingmag125,

As a physiologist, I know one of the easiest things to measure in regards to exercise is heart rate. You could measure people's heart rates at rest and after swimming. You could also expand the project to look at how different swimming strokes (i.e., freestyle, breast stroke, butterfly) affect the same people's heart rates differently; you could look at different age groups; or you could see how different lengths of time swimming affect heart rate differently.

Keep us posted as you decide on a project. This is an interesting topic! :)

Cheers,
Heather

you could measure the water quality (pH, Coliform bacteria present, dissolved oxygen.. etc..) of the nearby beaches/pools/lakes/rivers and verify if those places ar safe for public swimming. you can help your community by warning them of the dangers of the microorganisms in the waters might do. good luck! hope i helped.

How can we make a swimming pool more energy efficitent and environmentally friendly? We are looking for some alternative options for our new swimming pool. Does anybody know anything about solar power, environmentally friendly cleaners, or anything else that might be helpful and healthy?

Hi,

I have no personal experience with the upkeep of swimming pools, but if you type in 'how to make a swimming pool environmentally friendly' to Google, you get a number of hits. The first one leads here: http://www.associatedcontent.com/topic/ ... html?cat=2, which seems to have a lot of information about how to make your swimming pool greener. One caveat: this website looks suspiciously like it might be sponsored by some of the companies whose products they recommend, which means they are trying to sell you things. However, it might get you some basic information on the topic, and you might need to purchase some things if you really want to do an experiment on whether or not those things make swimming pools greener.

You might also want to try typing the same thing into Google and looking through some of the other links.

Hope this helps!
