i was wondering if you could give me any ideas on how to make my science project (Effects of Exercise: Changes in Carbon Dioxide Output) more advanced. my science teacher says that it is not a high enough level for a high school project, but it would have been okay a couple years ago in elementary school.
i would really appreciate it if you would give me some hints/ advice/ ideas on how to make my project more advanced.
Thank You for your time and help.

Re: making my project better
hello, i was reading your post and you did run into a problem. What i was thinking is that you can prbably google search that topic for highschool levels and you might be able to find something similar, but a little bit more complicated. Also, if you dont mind can u read our post and comment on it because we are also running into a problem and NO ONE seems to be replying Hope my advice is helpful and dont froget to check our post and COMMENT!!!

Hi Sav,
Welcome to the science buddies website. I remember there was a project with this title on the science buddies website, but I can't find it now, so I can't make specific suggestions on your experiment. What grade are you in and what science class are you taking? If you are in grades 6-8, you should check out the science buddies website and look for project that is rated in the range of 4 to 7 for difficulty. You want to do lots of background reading, and develop a specific question that you can answer with your experiment. Please let us know the details of your project, and we will try to make suggestions for increasing the level of difficulty. I think your teacher is trying to encourage you to do something more original and challenging.

Re: making my project better
Hi Sav,
I finally found the project you were referring to on the science buddies website:
https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... p013.shtml
The project requires the construction of a respirometer and then and using it to measure carbon dioxide output, presumably using subjects after different forms of exercise. You would need to do background research on exercise physiology, lung function, cardiac function, and pH. The project is rated a 7, which is the highest level of difficulty recommended for grades 6-8. You could make this project more challenging by doing additional background research to explain the science behind the project, by including more than one or two test subjects in your experiments, or by doing results in duplicate or triplicate. You could do research into measuring carbon dioxide and perhaps develop a more quantitative method for measuring carbon dioxide output.
Please let us know what grade you are in and what experiment you had proposed to your teacher, if you need additional suggestions.

Re: making my project better
Hi Sav,
As Donna pointed out, the experiment you're interested in performing is a good level for your grade, and it's quite interesting!
However, if your teacher wants you to do something more complicated
, I have an idea that will require more resources - you would have to see if you could borrow a carbon dioxide analyzer and oxygen analyzer (because an oxygen analyzer is too difficult to make yourself). If you are able to do this, you could measure something called "respiratory quotient," or RQ. The RQ is the ratio of carbon dioxide produced to oxygen consumed. Here is the Wikipedia description of it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Respiratory_quotient
Why would RQ be interesting?
Because it gives you an idea of what kind of fuel (sugars, fats, or proteins) the person is burning to keep the exercise going. You could measure RQ for different kinds of exercise, and see what kinds of foods best support the different kinds of exercise.
Keep us posted on your project, and let us know what you decide to do. I hope you're able to do the project you want, but am here to help if you decide to do something closer to what I suggested.
Good luck!
Heather
