Hi Sabrina,

ph measures how acid or base a solution is. (base is the opposite of acid and neutralizes acid.) A ph of 7 is neutral; the solution is neither acid or base.

Good explanations are at:
http://www.elmhurst.edu/~chm/vchembook/184ph.html
http://www.epa.gov/acidrain/measure/ph.html
http://www.essortment.com/all/understandphsc_rtgn.htm]

The wikipedia entry is at:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PH
it’s complete, but more difficult.

Hopefully the above answer your questions. Please post again, if you have questions. Thanks.
Cheers!

Hi Sabrina - There is a good introduction to Acids, Bases, and the pH scale on the Science Buddies site. You might find it useful as a starting point:

https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... cale.shtml

There is also a project idea for lower grade levels that introduces the pH scale. You might want to read through just the introduction here to see if it offers additional help: Cabbage Chemistry / https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... p013.shtml
