Project Question: Does our knowledge of the solar system give us a better chance of surviving such a catastrophe? How? What other benefit is it to know the solar system better? How can the position of sun, moon, and planets help us to know our position on Earth? How does knowing the conditions on other planets help us to appreciate Earth? Could there be life on other bodies in our solar system? Why or why not?

Wow! I can give you some things to think about. First of all, why did the ancients study the Heavens? Did they want to know about the regularity of the seasons (invent a calendar) so they could decide when to plant their crops? Did they want to use the stars ( think North star) to help find their way?

Today, some of us have seen that impacts of asteroids and comets with the Earth probably caused mass extinctions (especially of dinosaurs) in the past. We want to know what's up there so we can prepare for and predict future impacts. We may even be able to prevent an impact if we have enough advance warning.

As for life elsewhere in the Solar System. It's possible, but we have no evidence that it exists.
