Design a Process

Post by deleted-43787 »

Hi..
I am new here.. I have heard a lot of good things about SCIENCEBUDDIES..
I have got a project which is pretty difficult because of the requirements mentioned in Project by my teachers..
Consider yourself as a consultant of XYZ firm. You have been assigned the task of choosing a product of your interest such as enzymes, metabolites (primary or secondary), recombinant product, etc. You are then asked to design a process for the chosen product, study the economics, study any alternatives. You will identify the metrics of the scale, identify unit operations, allocate resources, etc. and design a plant. In the due process you will be scaling up a process from lab to industrial scale. As a guideline, you will follow and address the following aspects:
1. Choose a product by conducting a Literature search
2. The literature should be such that the growth kinetics are known or established
3. You will decide the metrics of the scale that you will be designing
4. You will identify the isolation, preservation and strain development appropriate for your organism
5. Select raw materials, media, etc. and work any alternatives based on economics
6. Based on the scale you will work out the alternatives of batch, fed-batch, continuous, etc.
processes
8. Calculate the requirements of the raw materials, media, etc.
9. Develop inoculums from lab to pilot scale to industrial scale
9. Design the unit operations for upstream (operations according to scale
10. Design recovery and purification i.e., downstream unit operations according to scale
11. Draw a process flow diagram
12. Draw a process and instrumentation diagram
13. Allocate resources such as personnel for the process 14. Work out the economics of the process

Finally, you will submit a neatly typed report. The report must contain a summary of the problem statement, product and microorganism chosen, metrics of the scale, process flow diagram, process and instrumentation diagram, methodology used, economics and design alternatives, summary and conclusion, and an appendix of all the necessary calculations required in terms of scaling the process from lab to industrial scale. You will also submit a soft copy of all the calculations and report.
Please look into it & give me some papers related to this. I am trying hard to get papers through google scholar. But all are giving only abstracts.
I just want some help on how to go about. Please help me with the calculations as well.. I will do my homework with your help on this..
I hope i have come to the right place..Sorry for so much demands..

If you want anymore information concerning the specificity of the project or any other suggestions please do letme know..
I will be eagerly waiting for the replys every 6hours..

Thanks for reading my huge 1st mail.. :D

Hi,

Sorry that no one has answered your post yet. However, I suspect that some experts may be unsure as to how to help you, and also somewhat unsure because this sounds like a homework project instead of a science fair project, and Science Buddies does not help with homework projects.

Regardless, though, I think you need to start by deciding which process you want to do your report on. We cannot help you with that--as the requirements say, it should be a process you are interested in. I assume you have been studying enzymes and metabolites and such in class; were there any of these that caught your attention? Or, do you already have a topic in mind?

Google scholar often only has abstracts because you need a paid subscription to access the articles. The best way to get the articles will be to go to your local university/college library and ask the librarians there for help.

Thank you Melissa mam for your reply.. :D

I was doing my research on Enzymes & their growth kinetics (in specific). But most of the papers that i chose gave only Abstracts..
Can you give me some 5 or more papers which relates GROWTH KINETICS WITH GLUCAGON OR INSULIN...
I will go through them & continue my research..

I really want your help in the initial stages, after that i can go on myself. But i will certainly come back when i am in doubt..
I just want some papers related to their requirements. The rest i will work out..
Please dont give up on me... :(

This website is truely Awesom. I read most the Projects that interested me in the Project Ideas..
I also went through the expert's supports in LIFE SCIENCE section of ASK AN EXPERT..
Please lend me the same support.. :D

This is a Project for competing with other Schools..
We cant decide upon the Projects. Our teachers look at our progress report & she assigns a project to test our knowledge & skills in a field which we are not exposed to.. :x
We have to present it in the form of a seminar by competing with 16 schools participants..

Please help..
Just need full papers..
Please help..

Hi,

This is a challenging project, but a topic of current interest. Here are some ideas and websites to help get you started.

First you need to pick a peptide or protein to purify. Many therapeutic proteins being developed now are monoclonal antibodies, but here is a list of recombinant proteins that are currently being manufactured.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_re ... t_proteins

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Use_of_bio ... ufacturing

One free source of information that will give you an idea of a specific protein, and procedures for growing the protein, developing a method to purify the protein, and scaling up the process is the journal, Biopharm. You might be able to contact advertisers in this journal to get detailed procedures you need. But Melissa is right; you definitely need to visit a University library to get the original references you need to document this project.

http://biopharminternational.findpharma.com/

I searched for articles on this topic, and could not find any good references for the production of the recombinant protein or the other topics you need to cover. I think this may be because much of the information has been developed by companies and the detailed information has not been published in the literature.

I’m hoping my suggestions will help get you started. Do let us know if you have any other questions.

Hi..
Thank you for liking my project, DonnaHardy2 mam..

I will go through the links that you gave me today..
I like BioPharm International link..
Hoping to become clear after i go through the website.. Thanks :D

Thank you for your suggestions & most importantly for replying..
I will come back on further questions..

Hi,

You are welcome. Finding the references you need is going to take some searching. I noticed that the bibliography on Wikipedia has some references that might be useful:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Insulin

Here is one of the formulas you will need for scale up.

http://www.rpi.edu/dept/chem-eng/Biotec ... _scale.htm

This website describes the different types of chromatography techniques used to purify recombinant proteins. Cation exchange chromatography is suitable for insulin purification.

Please do let me know if you have additional questions.

Wow!!!
Amazing..
I truly have no words now..
Because you completely reduced my hunting work & given me a clear view of what i should focus on..

Thank you DonnaHardy2 mam..
I will come back in few days after working on these links & others..
Thank you for your support..

My friends KIRAN (doing CHLOROPLAST SEQUENCING) & DARSHAN (doing WASTE WATER TREATMENT) are right..
