Backyard Ecosystem

My son is in the 3rd grade and this is his first science fair project. He would like to do "My backyard ecosystem". I am wondering if this is a suitable topic, and if he needs to include an experiment? He was thinking about showing components of his backyard ecosystem, such as soil, plant life, and animal life. We have a large backyard which includes a green belt and small pond. Is it okay to just show examples of these components, or does he need to do an experiment of some kind?

Generally, science fair projects begin with a question that contains certain variables. You should choose a question before beginning experimentation, because your question will guide you to what you will need to do. I'm not sure exactly what the project has to be, so maybe your son should ask his teacher if he can just study his backyard ecosystem, or if he needs a question.

Just to add to this, a good idea might be for him to do an observational experiment. For example, he could look to see if the types of plants that grow in your backyard change as he moves farther away from the water source (the pond). I suspect he might see some interesting differences!
