Look for the history of magnetic recording, starting with Vlidemar Poulsen and his wire recorder in 1900, the history of German wire recorders, and the history of Ampex tape recorders.
The short answer to your question is to take a modern tape recorder and replace the tape with steel wire. Your time machine just took you back 100 years. It will also sound as bad now as it did then and for all the same reasons. Do your own research and analysis for that.
Key words to look for are magnetic properties, such as hysteresis, permeability, coercivity, and electromagnetism.
