Well, we've already looked at the projects and they are either too easy or not fun. We dont want to make yogurt or study how milk curdles, we want to make marshmellows or study M&M's. :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?:

Hi Taggersbaby - There are a number of projects in the Food Sciences area at Science Buddies. They vary in difficulty, and many of them are appropriate for your grade level. You can view the list of Food Sciences projects and click the "show harder" button at the top of the page to see the projects that are in the higher difficulty range.

I think if you and your friend spend time looking, you might see something interesting.

There is a project related to Marshmallows:

Mixing Your Own Marshmallows: Finding the Right Ratio of Sugar to Corn Syrup
https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... p065.shtml

Or you might look at something like this:
Burning Calories: How Much Energy is Stored in Different Types of Food?
https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... ?from=Blog
(See blog entry on it: https://www.sciencebuddies.org/blog/201 ... n-fire.php )

Or maybe look at these:
How Can Tofu Pack Such a Flavorful Punch?
https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... p045.shtml

Temper, Temper, Temper! The Science of Tempering Chocolate*
https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... p038.shtml

There are many great food science project ideas here.

The American Chemical Society has an interesting seminar on tempering chocolate. Perhaps this will give you some direction. Here is the link http://acselementsofchocolate.typepad.c ... OLATE.html

Please be sure to keep in mind anything involving hot sugar can be dangerous! Not only can it get extrememly hot, but it is sticky as well. Make sure you're doing everything safely.
