Bacteria Growth

Post by asdkj »

Hello. My science fair project is," What is the Effect of Different Soaps on the Growth of Common Bacteria. So I was wondering if you could give me some information on bacteria growth. It would be a great help.

Thanks,
Tiffany

Hi Tiffany,

What type of bacteria will you be using for your project? If you know the bacteria type, or where you plan to get them it can help narrow down the background information you are looking for.

I think the Wikipedia note is a good place to start. You can further explore the links and references they provide at the end of this article - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bacterial_growth

I also want to make sure you have found this safety guide to help you will working with microrganisms - https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... fety.shtml

I am going to use bacteria found around my school's campus. Also, my science teacher said we can't use Wikipedia as a reference.

Right, you can't use Wikipedia but you can use the references they provide in the note, such as this one - http://members.optusnet.com.au/exponent ... cteria.htm

Also Cells Live has a nice website - http://www.cellsalive.com/ecoli.htm

Is this the type of information you are looking for? Or something more aimed at growing them yourself? Perhaps these Science buddies links on microbiology (near the middle of this page) - https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... ndex.shtml

Tiffany,

I would also read more into cell culture (it is knowledge that you will need to have as you advance further in the sciences, it is becoming a standard these days for many experiments).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cell_culture

http://www.protocol-online.org/prot/Cel ... index.html

Also, please consult with your high school instructor to see what facilities and equipment are available for your use.

So I would suggest that you first read up on the material, begin reading science articles/abstracts on PubMed (pubmed.gov), and then
brainstorm for possible experimental design and a testable hypothesis.

Keep it up!

Hi Tiffany,

Science Buddies has some great resources regarding techniques in microbiology. Click any of the links listed under Microbiology on this page: https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... l?From=Tab

On the Microbiology Techniques & Troubleshooting page (https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... ques.shtml), Science Buddies cites the Department of Biology at the University of Missouri in St. Louis. You can start by looking there, and you can use that site to help you find more references.

Good luck!
