Why are video gamers stereotyped?

Post by The VideoGamer »

Hello! I wanted to know: Why do people stereotype video gamers? I have already researched stereotyping and I wanted some more information on why gamers have been stereotyped. Thank you!

Hi!
The reason why so many gamers have been stereotyped is most likely due to several factors, which may include media and personal experience. Stereotypes about gaming stem from a population of gamers who may act or look a certain way, and as a result, people begin to observe commonalities between gamers and ultimately generalize these common characteristics to the entire gaming population, many of which are not true. Here is an interesting article about it:

If you have a specific project in mind, please post back with some more ideas that interest you, and perhaps you can narrow down your investigation to one specific stereotype. Good luck!

What might classify someone as a video gamer?

Post by The VideoGamer »

If someone calls themselves a "gamer" what exactly does that mean? Usually if someone says this they are not a casual gamer (someone who will play for fun, won't beat games, is drawn by advertising) but what might a person have to do to be considered by themselves and others a "gamer?" For example I consider myself a gamer because I will look up reviews for a game, I won't buy a licensed video game (they are usually low budget and bad), and I will probably play at least six hours a week. But that is just my opinion. What is the general opinion besides stereotypes? Feel free to post your one opinions if you can't come up with a general idea, that way I can compile and make my own definition. Thank you!

Hi,

I recommend that you post all of your questions on the same topic. That way everyone who has responded to your inquiry will be notified when you reply.

I think you are thinking about doing this project from the science buddies website.

https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... p021.shtml

This project suggests doing two surveys, one to determine what traits people associate with gamers, and a second survey of people who actually play games to find out if the traits are accurate.

For your project, since you consider yourself a gamer, and since you have identified specific traits, then you could do a survey of two groups of people; one group who considers themselves gamers and one group that does not. You could try to match the two groups for age and gender.

In my experience with students your age who consider themselves gamers, I would agree with you that they play 6 or more hours per week, but I don’t think they read reviews or refuse to buy licensed videos. I think that you should do a survey and find out. This should be an interesting and challenging project.

Good luck!

Hello and thank you! Yes I was taking inspiration from that project but my teacher didn't want us to use it directly. But, I was coming to the conclusion myself that I needed to do two surveys. I was planning to survey middle schoolers. Also, are there any studies that research if video gamers are good judges of themselves?
