i need a way to calculate how much bacteria is removed from the floor when its sprayed with a disinfectant or a cleaner.
the experiment consists of spraying the floor with the cleaner and comparing different cleaners to each other to see which removes more bacteria
If you could help me find a way to know how much bacteria is being removed that would be great
~please and thank you ^.^
Hi!
Interesting idea! The problem with the floor is that there isn't a standard amount of bacteria that is on each part of the floor. In order to standardize your experiment, you should obtain a solution that contains the same amount of bacteria and pour them into separate plates and test the disinfectants in the plates so that you can easily compare how effective each disinfectant is. Hope this helps!

This is an excellent project! One way to measure the bacteria on the floor would be by transferring the bacteria from a measured surface area to the surface of an agar plate using a sterile swab. You could measure the bacteria from 10 square centimeters of a section of floor and compare results with adjacent 10 square centimeter sections that had been exposed to different disinfectants. The number of bacteria in the uncleaned section of floor would be your control.
The science buddies website has good background information on microbiology. I recommend reading through the microbiology section in the project guide.
thank you very much ^.^ that really helped when i did the expirament )
when this is presented is it better to have a a sort of speech ready or should it be extemporaneous?
Congratulations on completing your science fair project! I'm glad we could help.
When giving a speech on your science fair project, I always think it is better to be prepared. You will want to explain the purpose of your project, your hypothesis, how you did the experiment, what your results were, whether or not your hypothesis was correct, and what you learned in doing the project. I think it's good to have a family member ask questions about your project and then practice answering questions. Communicating your discoveries is a very important part of doing a science fair project.
