do solids have an effect on melting ice?

Post by laracroft »

hi. its me, Victoria, after two years of science fair at All Saints. My science question is: what effect do different solids have on the time it takes to melt ice? i have NO idea what kind of expert to interview or who to interview. my teacher is busy to give me any advice on who i should interview, so i need an expert of at least two years on a topic like this. if anyone reads this, please answer back! i need the information ASAP! Here are my questions:
1. When did you first learn about this topic?
2. What motivated you to study the topic?
3. what are some of the most important things you have learned about this topic?
4. Why do you think this topic is important, useful, or interesting?
5. What practical applications have you found for this topic?
5. Can you please describe colligative properties to me?
Now, i don' t have any other questions related to the actual project but just throwing ideas out there might help. i'm running out of things to put on my info notecards. oh, and a signature is required but optional for you to do. Thanks a bunch! -Victoria :?:

Hi. When did you first learn about this topic?
In high school chemistry.

2. What motivated you to study the topic?
Part of class experiments

3. what are some of the most important things you have learned about this topic?
To see much of an effect your solids will have to dissolve in water or be in particles about the size of typical molecules. Otherwise the main effect you will see is related to how much energy it takes to raise the temperature of the solid one degree compared to how much energy it takes to raise the temperature of ice one degree. If they are the same the ice plus solid will melt about as fast as the same mass of pure ice.

4. Why do you think this topic is important, useful, or interesting?
It bears on how do we get ice off roads in winter, particularly relevant right now.

5. What practical applications have you found for this topic?
Making homemade ice cream & melting ice on roads in winter and deicing aircraft

5. Can you please describe colligative properties to me?
These links explain colligate properties:

I hope this helps.

Good luck on the project!
