What is the best thickness of insulation for preventing heat loss?

You need to do some additional reading on how thermal insulation works. Your investigational question has some scientific flaws.mf2010 wrote:What is the best thickness of insulation for preventing heat loss?
1) Our current scientific understanding is that you can't prevent heat transfer, all you can do is slow down or speed up the rate of heat transfer between regions of different temperatures.
2) There is a theoretical and mathmatical (but impractical) solution to the "best thickness of insulation", infinite thickness.
From an engineering standpoint, judging solutions for which is "best" requires a criterion that weights various factors. Typically these are called "cost functions". For an engineering project, some factors might be how long it takes to build, what it costs to build, how long something will be disrupted during the process. Typical cost functions involve weighting several factors to come up with an overal cost for each solution being evaluated.
Using different cost functions to evaluate the same solutions may yield different rankings of which is best.

To Craig's point, there is no "best" insulation that is not infinitely thick. But, using engineering principles, combined with principles of heat transfer and thermodynamics, you can identify which of several insulation systems is "better".

You may want to modify your title to something like best choice of insulation for preventing heat loss, so that you can compare different materials as well. One material may prove much more efficient, economical, less toxic, etc., and therefore a better choice for a variety of reasons.
