3rd Grade Cancer-related science fair project Ideas

Post by poctaviaj »

Since I am a recent breast cancer survivor & one of my children's classmates just died of bone cancer last week, my 3rd grader & her friend want to do a science fair project related to cancer.
Does anyone have any suggestions for an age-appropriate project for 3rd graders? The project is due January 16, 2012 so they are just starting. Thank you for any help you can provide!

Hi,

Here's a cancer-related project that is on the easy side : https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... 8&from=TSW . I know previous students have had some issues with those personal UV monitors mentioned in the project, so you might want to do a search for this project on Ask an Expert so you can avoid running into those later.

You might also look through the genome and genetics project ideas; you can find the link here: https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... l?From=Tab . Several of the easier ones would be appropriate for a third grader.

I hope this helps!

Were you able to find a project? I did a quick yahoo search in case you couldn't find anything on the Science Buddies (wonderful) website. As you know, cancer is caused by cellular damage much of which is in our genetic code. Here is a link to a genetics project website concerning building a DNA matrix. Maybe you could use it as a starting point to show how it might like different for a cancer patient (present or future). http://biology.about.com/od/biologyscie ... 02005a.htm

Good luck!

Hi there,

I agree that the Science Buddies website has a wealth of information. Here is another site with some cancer-related project suggestions for 4th, 5h, & 6th grade levels: http://www.juliantrubin.com/fairproject ... ancer.html. Once your daughter decides on a project, please post back here with any questions you may have!
