Characteristics Of Rope- Stregth, Flexability, and Abrasion

Post by Ctyre34 »

Hello,
My Name is Thomas and I am doing a report on the characteristics of rope in three different areas, Strength, Flexibility, and Abrasion. I have a few questions about certain areas of my project.
Thanks in advance.
1.What is Tension, how does it play a big part on how ropes made?
2. Why do ropes have a heavy working load? Is there heavy working load a breaking point?
3. How does the way rope is made (weaved, twisted, braided) affect the ropes strength and durability to abrasion?
4. Does rope at all flex? If so, why is rope able to do that?
5. How is rope used around the world today?
6. Do different ropes, have strength and weakness, example:( does nylon have a higher abrasion resistance then cotton.)
7. What defines the word rope?
8. How does rope differ from things like string, line, or cord?
9. What is torque, how is torque a big factor in rope?
10. How had rope evolved over time ever since rope has first been invented? (history of rope)
Thanks So Much,
Thomas 8th grade Science Student

I see you are just beginning your science project, and are asking some good, basic questions.

You need to do some basic research first. Then, when you have some specific questions about your project, you can post back on this forum, and we will be able to help you.

We hope to hear back from you so we can help you solve a problem with your project.

do you have any suggestions as to some good questions?
Thanks

Hello edneu3,
I have come up with more specific questions after I conducted my experiment. I would love if someone could answer. Thanks in advance.

1. When rope is put under pressure is its maximum working load the point where it breaks?
2. Which ropes would you recommend for being able to hold a weight? Pulling something? Durability?
3. If a rock climber were to go rock climbing, what rope would you suggest they use? Why?
4. What is your classification on rope? Is there different subgroups that you feel that different ropes go under?
5. When I took rope and attached it to a pole and then pulled it back with a forklift, why did the rope shoot back like a slingshot the other direction it was being pulled?
6. Why do ropes have a maximum working load? Is that there breaking point?
7. If you were going to pull a trailer full of heavy materials what rope would you use? why?
8. In your opinion, do you think rope gradually loses its strength after usage? If so why?

Thanks a lot,
A Eager Science Student.

Hi - As Ed said, you need to do your research and then come back with specific questions. Your list is great! However, these are the types of questions your experiment can answer. You will want to narrow your experiment to one or two of these questions and try to answer them with your data and research.
