suggestions for science fair idea!

hi, could you help me in deciding on a science fair topic.

-The topic HAS to be relevant to the subject -----> responding to the problems of the world
- due in less than 3 weeks and totally stuck
- i am in year 10, which i think is like grade 9 (im 14)

To find a science fair idea, I would suggest you use the topic selection wizard (https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... gister.php) which, based on your answers to some questions (and time is a variable for example) provides you with a bunch of ideas.

Based on what you indicated, I filled out the form and those projects came up:

However, I strongly encourage you to use the topic selection wizard by yourself as you know what you want more than I do!

This is the most challenging part of the experiment. Finding a science topic is the biggest hurdle overcome. You can narrow down your choice by selecting from earth science, Biology or Chemistry.Depending upon how much time you have and what are the resources available to you, you can choose an appropriate topic. One good suggestion is that make it challenging and do not not worry about your results or findings. Go to science buddies for more suggestions.

Thank you for your help, I am currently looking through the suggestions and i think the lactose intolerance experiment is something i would be inclined to do. One question; the experiment is aimed at grades 5-7, and I'm in year 10 (14 yrs, grade 9?). Do you think this experiment is too easy as a grade 9 student?

I think that lactose intolerance is an extremely interesting subject (it evolved several times independently in the human populations, and humans today descending from peoples who weren't dairy farmers and dairy big consumers are not lactose tolerant today!).

As for the level the project is aimed at, 5 to 7 is the level of difficulty, meaning that it is intended for people from grades 6 to 8. However, the level of bibliographical research as well as how you put your results in perspective might clearly depend on your grade. Since it is a project that interests you, I would suggest that you take it!

I do agree that lactose intolerance is an interesting topic, it relates to me as I personally know people who are affected by it and the experiment fits the criteria of responding to the problems of the world. Perfect! And also thank you, I understand about the grade system you put on your experiments, and I will try to further develop the experiment and present it to a higher standard Tomorrow i will be starting it writing up my log book, and gathering the equipment needed! I need some help, sorry to bother you again....
Today I was meant to be gathering all my resources for the Lactose Intolerance experiment I am to do. --> https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... W&fave=yes

But upon going to the local pharmacy, the pharmacist said they did not know or sell
- lactase drops

and that hardly anyone uses Glucose test strips for urinalysis..... ?

he also said that a suitable substitute for Glucose tablets was Barley Sugar - i thought sugar catagorised under sucrose ?

This has been a major set back for my experiment. And I live in New Zealand btw. I really wanted to do this experiment!!
- I am wondering if I can substitute Glucose tablets for Barley sugar, or just use High Energy Glucose instead.
- Whether a product called "Ketostix" which is a reagent strip for urinalysis is a subsitute, though on the back says it has KETONE acid ?
- And if i can buy lactase drops anywhere

As you mentioned, they are only testing for ketones (which indirectly gives you information about your glucose blood level). But maybe you can access another product from the same brand, Keto-diastix (http://www.glucosemeters4u.com/keto-diastix.htm) which tests for both ketones and glucose. An alternative way to go if you really can't find any glucose test strips for urine is to get this product: http://www.petshoponline.co.nz/buy/gluc ... le_Pack%29, that could work in your experiment. It is a reagent that reacts to glucose in the litter for cats, and it sold online in New Zealand.

In relation to the "High Energy Glucose", it is powdered glucose mixed in with some dextrose. I did see similar tablets at the pharmacy, but they only had flavoured (raspberry, orange and peppermint). Would flavoured make a difference.? Anyway , if those are not suitable I can use the High Energy Glucose.

I can not thank you enough with the amazing alternatives you have given me. I am going to immediately buy them online yay i can do my experiment!!

the high energy glucose should work, make sure the quantities of glucose you're using are equivalent to those presented in the project. And for the other tablets, the flavor should not make a difference.
