Hypothesis statement ??

Post by SLC »

Is the following a hypothesis??? Central senzitisation is present in participants suffering chronic pain associated with spinal cord injury or damage compared to healthy controls?? And is the independant variable = chronic pain, the dependant variable = central senzitisation. Any help would be great thanks.

Dear SLC,
Hypothesis is a calculated guess of the outcome of your project. In this case your hypothesis is right but if you word it better it makes it flow better and easy to follow. Also, a brief reasoning as to why you made that guess completes the hypothesis statement. I hope this helps.

Take care,

Hi annmarie,

Here is a really great page on Science Buddies that explains what independent variables versus dependent variables are in experiments, if you haven't already seen it!

https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... evariables

Hopefully this is helpful. The best way to learn how to identify variables in experiments is to practice doing it! Try to figure out what the variables are in the question you posed, and feel free to post your thoughts and we can discuss about whether they are correct and why.

I understand the plant seeds are the independent variable. But what is the dependent variable?

Hi Annmarie,

You are correct about the amount of seeds being the independent variable because that is the variable you are changing. Now think about what you are measuring in response to varying amounts of the plant seeds and that is what the dependent variable is.
