Electrolyte Challenge:: Orange Juice vs. Sports Drink

Post by Sunshinegirl7 »

I am doing my project on the Electrolyte Challenge(https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... ml#summary). In this experiment what is my constant and my variable? And is there enough information out there on Electrolytes to write my 9th grade science project research paper?

Hi,

Be sure to review the variables section (https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... bles.shtml) of our Science Fair Project Guide (https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... ndex.shtml) - there is alot of useful information in there.

In this experiement, the objective is to investigate whether or not a sports drink provides more electrolytes than orange juice. You will measure the conductance and answer the question: "Which liquid has the highest conductance, meaning the most electrolytes?" The independent variable is the one changed by the scientist - in this case, it is the test solution (sports drink versus orange juice). The dependent variable responds to the change made by the independent variable - in this case it is the conductance you measure.

Hi Sunshinegirl7,

Sunmoonstars has already given you some great advice. Your independent variable is the type of drink, and the dependent variable (what you measure in response) is the conductance. If you want to include a control, you could use water as a control drink. That way, you can compare the conductance of your two drinks (sports drink and orange juice) to the conductance of water (as a baseline).

If you do a bit of research, you will definitely find enough information on Electrolytes for your background section of your project.

Please post again with any more questions you have!
