Guidance needed for making Project for INTEL ISEF 2013

Post by curious1 »

Hi Guys, I have chosen a topic to do some research and to take Part in Intel ISEF 2013 or 2014 and want to ask that Is this Topic is right in your views?

The Topic is- Dengue fever (I was wondering if i could get some help with use of the Dengue virus because there is no medicine developed to cure it and no any accurate test is made to get perfect results about it and I want to make this Project Awesome by Discovering something new in this.)

1. Do you like this topic to do research and take part in INTEL ISEF 2013 or 2014 after researching on this topic?

2. Is it good from your point of Views?

3. Will Intel allow to submit project of this type or Is there any limitation on it ?

4. Can I do Research in this topic ?

5. Do have any better Topic , IDEA or tips?

Please reply, I will we grateful by your replies all comment will be appreciated.

Hi,

Welcome to Science Buddies! This is a great idea for a science project and definitely very worthwhile.

Do you have access to a laboratory with biological safety level -2 facilities? I believe the dengue virus is classified as BSL-2, but you should confirm this. Science projects can be done with BSL-2 organisms, but not with BSL3- or 4.

There are many potential discoveries that can be made on this topic. For a winning science project, I recommend doing as much background reading as possible and find out what researchers have discovered on this topic. Then you can design your experiment to make the next discovery based on the scientific literature.

Here is information about a upcoming issue of the scientific journal, Viruses, that will focus on dengue fever. You should read all the five articles that are at the bottom of the page, as these are recent research papers on Dengue and will give you an idea of what you might do for your project.

I think the lack of a good diagnostic test would be a good topic to investigate. Or, you could investigate some aspect of the mosquito; either how the virus replicates in the mosquito host, or perhaps develop a new method to control mosquitoes.

You will definitely need approval from your local scientific review committee before starting any experiments. Ask your teacher about this if you have any questions about this process.

Why are you interested in dengue fever? This is a definitely a unique idea for the science project.

Hi Guys, I want to Participate in INTEL ISEF 2013 OR 2014 AND I have choosen a topic of dengue virus for my Project But before going further I want to know that Is Dengue virus is classified as BSL-2 or coming in another category , because Science projects can be done with BSL-2 organisms, but not with BSL3- or 4. And for that I search on a site and it gave me this picture.

Hi Curious,

According to the link you found, Dengue virus is classified as a CDC biosafety lebel BSL-2 virus, so you would be able to do your project with this virus. However, you do need access to a laboratory with suitable facilities for working with this virus, and you will need prior approval from your local scientific review committee before you begin.

What are you planning to do for your experiment?
