- Project Question: In our science project, my friend and I decided to work on something that had to do with smiling. The project we are interested in is "Is smiling contagious?" The basic summary of the project is going around smiling at people seeing if they smile back at you. Our science teacher told us that we can only do this project if we find a way to tie it into helping others...Any ideas?

Alopecia Areata
My partner and I are entering the science fair and are having trouble making this topic into an experiment. One thing we would like to know is would a substance given to suppress the immune system during an organ transplant help treat Alopecia Areata?

Re: Alopecia Areata
Great question!
I just discussed this with my friend who is a doctor and her answer was probably not. The substance wouldn't stop hair loss she said. Some of the reasons are the other factors that cause hair loss (stress, age, genetics). Maybe you can do another project on Alopecia Areata and one of those factors.
Let me know if you need more info!

Re: Alopecia Areata
Hi Amanda,
I think I have been communicating with your partner about your project: https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... 28&t=10749
I am not sure that you will be able to do an experiment related directly to Alopecia Areata, but here are a couple Science Buddies projects related to the immune system, which may help you think of related ideas:
https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... p008.shtml
https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... p003.shtml
I hope this helps!
Heather
