Why mold grows on cheese

Post by donnahardy2 »

Hi Matthew,

Mold spores are always floating around in the air, and when they land on a suitable food source, they will germinate and grow. Cheese provides an ideal growth medium because it contains high water content, a slightly acidic pH, and lots of protein and fat. Ecologically, molds are important because they help recycle elements. There are many different types of molds, but all require oxygen and moisture.

Now, why are you asking? Are you planning to do a science project on cheese mold, or did you need an explanation for your results? Please let us know if you need more information.
