This is a pretty broad topic. Do you have a specific hypothesis in mind? Is this a science fair project? Are you doing anything like surveying your friends to compare their experiences with OTC vs prescription cold medications? What prescription cold medications are you thinking of?

The side effects of prescription drugs have been well documented but some OTC products may be controversial. There are the standard OTC decongestants, antihistamines and cough suppressants whose side effects are well known, but there are also herbal or homeopathic remedies that are advertised as effective, but their effects have not all been studied. When you say 'harmful' what do you mean? Causing disease, organ damage, headache...?

We might be able to help you, but you need to explain better what you are after. Send us another post with more details.

Best wishes,

Sybee
