thanks for the reply!! in my project i have to use e coli bacteria on a agar plate and use over the counter medications to see which medications are most productive. my question today is how can i start on this and where to start???

You have a cool idea! One thing to keep in mind is that E. coli is a laboratory strain of bacteria (and very easy to work with), but the type of bacteria that cause acne are called P. acne. It is perfectly okay - and probably a good idea - to use E. coli for your project. Just make sure to acknowledge this difference when presenting the results of your project.

Along with the great advice Heather gave you, I'd personally begin by researching basic concepts about bacterial proliferation as well as learning some lab techniques on how to work with and obtain agar, etc. Have you chosen the medications you want to test yet? If not, try finding a wide spectrum of choices - the most effective known on the market today all the way down to the least effective. Thinking about a positive and negative control would be good as well.
