Average construction beam strength?!!!! VERY IMPORTANT!!!

Post by SMargaret »

Hi,
For my project, I need to figure out what the average load bearing capacity for an average sized I-beam, if there is such a thing as an average sized I beam. If there isn't, could you help me find out how much an 18 inch, 5/16 wide iron I-beam can support? I took the measurement from my own basement where the I-beams are exposed.
Thanks!

Hello:

I searched for "I beam load tables" and found many sites with curves and tables which answer your load question. Give it a try! As you'll find from your search, there are many sizes of I beams, so using the one you measured in your basement sounds like a good plan.
