I am interested in doing my project on drug solubility. I want to see if the acidity of the stomach affects how fast a drug dissolves. What pH settings do you recommend I use? Also, how do I measure how much of the drug didnt dissolve when I conduct my experiment in order to get the results? How long should I leave the drug in the liquid before analyzing the results?

Hi,
Stomach acid typically has a pH of around 1. There are multiple ways to simulate stomach acid.
1. HCl(hydrochloric acid which is the active component of stomach acid). Try to obtain standardized 0.1M hydrochloric acid because it has a pH of around 1. You can ask your science teacher or buy it online.
2. Muriatic acid. This you could buy at a hardware store, however it would need to be diluted. To do this, add 2ml of muriatic acid to 120ml of water.
3. Vinegar: this may be easier to obtain but it has a pH of around 2.4. The pH is not totally off but it is not as close as the other options.
4. Lemon juice: this substance is readily available but has a pH of around 2.2 and is not as close as the other options to actual stomach acid.
If you wanted to see how the acidity affects how fast a drug dissolves, I would use the HCl, lemon juice, tomato juice(pH of 4), black coffee(pH of 5) and some other acids. I would use a timer to time how long it takes for the drug to dissolve completely in each solution, this way you don't need to fish out material.
