Burning Calories Experiment - How do I make it more complex?

Post by maddieloves-science »

Hi Guys!
This is such an awesome site :D anyway i am doing a science assessment and I love this burning calories experiment but was wondering how I could make it more complicated? As i am in year 10 and want to do really well in this assessment! Also what kind of foods should I test?
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE REPLY!!!
Thankyou,
Maddie

I really like to see people that are ambitious about their science projects!!!

That said, this is one of those experiments that looks easy, but it turns out that there are a *lot* of ways make mistakes while doing it. It's one of the experiments that we get the most questions about. There are a lot of ways for heat to escape in this system, making it tricky to get good measurements. Perhaps it would make the most sense for you to do the experiment as-is first, to make sure that you understand the principles well, and can execute the experiment accurately before trying to make it more complicated.

Thankyou! That is good advice! So essentially how can I stop heat from escaping though? Thankyou so much for replying, I am so excited to this experiment. However, I worry that is is not complex or original enough. Thoughts?? :D :D

Another question! When making the calorimeter how large and how small should my cans be? Are there any ways I can stop the heat from escaping?? PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Hi maddieloves-science,

The materials & procedure for the following Project Idea discusses what size(s) of cans work well. A Google search for "homemade calorimeter" also brings up a lot of results that you could consider incorporating into your project. Since you were asking for ways to make this project more advanced, you could try comparing different size(s) of cans or different ways of insulating the calorimeters. But, like Ray said, calorimetry is easy in principle, but actually quite hard to do accurately. Have you tried Ray's advice - to do the experiment as outlined?
All the best,
Terik
