Project Question: using planaria see the effects of curcumin on memory curves. To do this project, I want to have an idea about how to condition them for direction, what all materials are required and how to proceed and what are the controlled and variable parameters in experiments.

need help with science project (first timer)

Post by radhika »

hi Sciencebuddy

I am new and going to do my first science fair project. I have selected my project to determine effects of turmeric (curcumin) on Alzeihmer's disease using planaria and studying their memory curves using a T-maze.
Here are my questions:

What kind of data do I need to research to start with?
What type of materials would I require and where to get them?
How to proceed with my experiment? (step by step)
What are the controlled and variable factors in my experiment?
What type of precautions are required?

I am totally novice and do not have any clue whatsoever. Please help me. I know conditioning of planaria is required and it will take many trials and I have due date in October 2014. So plenty of time.
Please guide me on this journey.

Hi Radikha,

Please keep your posts in a single thread. I answered you already in the grades 6-8 forum. You should only post questions in the forum corresponding to your actual grade level and keep them all in a single thread. Otherwise the experts will miss some of them and not be able to answer you properly.

hi science buddy

I need your guidance as to what type of instrument should I build to condition the planaria using light and electric shock. What are the required material and how to build the instrument in which I can give shock. Any videos, diagrams, will be very helpful. Once I build the instrument, then I am planning to order planaria for my science project as discussed earlier.

Radhika,

Please keep your posts all in one thread and in one forum. We can't keep track of your progress if you have multiple threads in several forums!

Thanks,

Sybee
