Project Question: Hi I would like to make a methane digester using cow manure. I understand I must seal them and have tubing run through the buckets, but what I'm having trouble with is how am I going to make the methane burn through a flame and make energy for a light bulb.

Manure Digester

Post by deleted-226860 »

Hi,I would like to enter the Intel-Affiliated Contra Costa Science and Engineering Fair. My project consist of making several manure digesters. Each will have a different variable to test which digester will make more bio-gas. My project has a Biosafety level of 2. Meaning I must have a qualified Scientist or designated supervisor. Will my Biotechnology teacher be able to or is there someone who would be willing to?

Hi,

That sounds like a really worthwhile project. In order to perform experiments under BSL2 conditions you need to have a definition of what they are. Try to get the requirements as stipulated for your science fair so you can be positive that your work will meet their approval. Also, why don't you just contact someone at the fair and ask them about having your teacher be your supervisor. If your teacher is familiar with working under BSL2 conditions and has the personal protection equipment and facilities to do your experiments I don't see why they can't be the designated person.

Let us know how this turns out and send us any questions you have about setting up the manure digesters and measuring the gas output.

Good luck!
