I was curious about what oxidation state really is, just as a reference for science fair projects. What is it really, and how is it measured?

Hi swaggerpapa100,

Oxidation state refers to the number of electrons that have been lost or gained by an atom, assuming a completely ionic bond. You can find out more details about oxidation state in this nice Wikipedia article:
