Got Iron Project

Post by Number10XD »

I am interested in doing the Got Iron? project that is on Science Buddies but i want to change it up. I want to test three waters: Distilled, tap, and either bottled or mineral water. I was wondering if the procedure would remain the same or if i would change some things up? I'm not sure and i don't want to mess it up since i have limited time. Thank you for any help!

HI Number10XD,
Based on what I have reviewed in the procedure, there should be nothing that you need to change for you to measure the iron content in the three waters that you mentioned.
My only recommendation is that please be careful about cross contaminating the waters so that your results aren't effected. (You can do this by by performing the test in separate container or rinse the container with the sample multiple time for each type of water.)
Good Luck!

Thank you! Also i saw that the main material needed isn't carried online anymore so i was wondering if a similar item like this would work: https://www.google.com/shopping/product ... IsBEPMCMAM

Also would this item change the procedure??? If so how would i change the procedure? I don't want to buy it and have it not work! I also don't want to change my project considering i have very limited time now. Thank you!

And is there any way i can expand this project like test the rate iron dissolves in other liquids? Would that work or no? Also the project question would be: Which liquid does iron dissolve in fastest? Right??? Thank you!!!!!!!!

Hi Number10XD,
The test kit that you found should be fine as a substitute for the Hach.
In regards to your other questions about testing the "rate iron dissolves in other liquids," it sounds to me like it will be possible. However, you may want to do more research (try googling the term "dissolution rate of iron in water") and see if this is something you really want to do.
Best of Luck with your experiment!
