The independent variable is the one thing you alter in your experiment while keeping everything else constant. You hung the two cans from pieces of string. Did the string length change? After you record data from a few experiments, what do you change to see what effect to may have?

The dependent variable is the one that changes as a result. It's the output of the experiment if you like. What changes when you alter the way you do your experiment?
