- Project Question: I am working on the Shed Light On Electricity project for my science fair. I am up to the point in which I am testing the generator to see if it works. It does not. I have followed all the troubleshoot questions and it still won't light up the LED.

Re: Shed Light on Electric Generators: Do More Coils Generat
samsamthebam - This experiment should be pretty straightforward. If you wound the coil carefully, scraped the insulation off the ends, the LED is functional and there is not a short circuit between the coil and the core, you should get the LED to flash. Because the poles reverse themselves each magnet passes close to the core ends, it is producing AC current. The LED is a diode and will only conduct when the voltage is positive on the anode. Therefore the flashing. In that you aren't getting any flashing do you have a meter to test the continuity of the coil winding (use the ohmmeter) and check connections to the LED. Make the insulated magnet wire is not shorted to the iron core of the coil. Are the magnet poles N & S arranged properly around the hex nut? Check these issues and you should be able to correct whatever is not set up right.
