Soil Science Project
Hello! I was going to test out the effects of acid rain and alkaline rain on plant growth and bacteria, and then create a "buffer" that could be used to increase the buffering capacity of the soil and decrease the effects of the acid and alkaline rain. Do you think this could work?

Re: Soil Science Project
Hi there,
Interesting idea for a science project. I have several questions on your experimental setup though to get an idea about your thought process. If you give us a bit more detail, we'd be able to give you more constructive feedback about whether this project is feasible. How are you going to test the effects of acid rain and alkaline rain on plants and bacteria? Where will you gather actual samples of acid or alkaline rain? Or are you just going to make solutions that are acidic or basic and add them to the plant or bacteria? How are you going to measure plant growth and bacteria growth? How often will you take those measurements? What changes do you expect to see (i.e. Do you think the plants and bacteria will grow less or grow more in acid or alkaline rain?). How are you going to create your "buffer"? Are you going to pour the buffer onto your soil before you "add" the acid or alkaline rain to see if the buffer can decrease the effects of acid and alkaline rain (whatever these effects may be)?
These questions are good things to think about as you plan out your experiment. Please let us know if you have any other questions.
