Does Chemical Lightening Affect the Structure of Human Hair?

Hello! I have a question on the science project mentioned above: what form of chemistry applies to it? Analytical, nuclear, physical, etc. I wasn't exactly sure what to choose so that I could write my background paper. : ) Thank you!

Hi Hallelujah7,

After reading the project details provided here

https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... p020.shtml

I think that both organic chemistry and physical chemistry are involved.

Organic chemistry is the study of reactions and structures of carbon compounds (organic compounds). In this project, components of the hair lighteners react with hair proteins and may change the protein structures. Proteins are organic compounds so this part of the project seems to be a definite fit with organic chemistry.

Physical chemistry is the study of physical principles and measurements to understand properties of matter. The hair hygrometer experiment described in the project indicates whether the hair structure changed as a result of the hair lightener treatments. So the measurement part of the project is an example of physical chemistry.

I hope this helps and good luck with your project. Please post again if you have more questions.
