How to isolate L. casei?

Post by deleted-313531 »

Hi guys,

I want to do a project involving putting L. casei bacteria against other bacteria. How can I isolate L. casei from a yoghurt, DanActive? Or is it not necessary?

Thanks in advance. :D

Hi,

If you want a pure culture of L casei then you probably will have to buy it from a commercial supplier. Carolina Biologicals has L acidophilus, but I don't know if they have L casei: http://www.carolina.com/bacteria/lactob ... /155110.pr You can call them and ask.

Pure cultures of L casei can be purchased by your school from the American Type Culture Collection (ATCC), but they are quite expensive: http://www.atcc.org/Search_Results.aspx ... ei&redir=1

I did a quick search for probiotic products that contain L casei and there are some, but they all contain other ingredients and in some cases, other species of bacteria. You could buy one of these products and swab some of it onto a nutrient agar plate then pick a colony that hopefully would be L casei and streak that onto another plate to get a pure culture. But you cannot be 100% sure that what you have is L casei.

Let us know if we can help you more.
