Science Project Under Pressure

Post by deleted-333983 »

I was wondering about the hypothesis for the science project Under Pressure: Sand Under Lateral Compression. Is it about how the properties of the sand effect the outcome or what happens when lateral compression is applied to the sand?

Hi Kbarnjak,

Welcome to Science Buddies!

I think you are doing this excellent, but challenging project:

https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... p024.shtml

The project describes how to construct a test chamber for measuring the effects of lateral compression of sand. The hypothesis would be your guess about what would happen if one parameter is changed and it suggests measuring the effects of the particle size of the sand, or perhaps the amount of water used (using one particle size of sand). You can probably think of other conditions that could be varied.

If you build the test chamber and use it with one set of conditions, it will make a good demonstration project. For the science fair, you need to do an experiment and select one independent variable that will be changed and measure the results of the change (your dependent variable). If you do some background reading, you might be able to predict what will happen, but your experimental results will either verify or disprove your hypothesis.

So, what is your experimental question? What is the purpose of your experiment.

Please let me know if you need additional explanation. Also, when is your project due?
