Stem cell based project

Hello,
I am currently in grade 10 and I am highly interested in stem cell research. I have been doing science fairs for years, but this year I would really like to try something new. My question is, what would be a good idea for a feasible experiment and aim for a stem cell based project. I have already done projects based on stem cell research, but I need something that I could test practically. I would love to be able to do something related to the growth of muscle tissue, even grow some muscle cells if at all possible. I am prepared to work hard and learn lots, I just need a good starting point.

Hi Izzy,

Stem cell research is a really hot area right now, but it is not the sort of thing you can do on the kitchen table. We can suggest lots of great projects, but if you do not have a lab to do them in or permission from your school or the science fair authorities then we are just wasting our time. So, please post again with more details about whether you have the capability to culture human or animal cells and access to a laminar flow hood, centrifuges, microscopes, instruments for fluorescent microscopy, ELISA, western blotting, PCR, etc.

We'll be happy to help you develop a great stem cell project once we know what kinds of experiments you are able to preform.

Hi Izzy,
A good model for stem cells, aside from using cell cultures, is planaria. These are flatworms that can regenerate portions of the body. Another model for stem cell studies is the salamander, but there would be more restrictions on the study of salamanders than planaria. If you don't have access to lab equipment mentioned by Sybee, you may still be able to study stem cells in planaria. However, if you're looking to study a specific type of stem cell, it would be difficult without that lab equipment.
